Activities and Productions

Play Readings The readings are a great opportunity to read favorites and less famous plays aloud, as they were meant to be, with other interested students. The readings are usually held in Rolfe Hall in the Commons (Rolfe 1301) or the second floor seminar room (Rolfe 2310). We recommend that you bring a copy of the play with you.
There are currently no play readings scheduled.

Quarterly Scene Nights Each academic quarter the Shakespeare Group performs a selection of scenes from various plays. Each scene is independent, with a separate director and cast, which provides for a widely diverse production. We are committed to providing acting and directing opportunities to as many students as we can. Over the quarters we have had:

Scene Nights: A medley of scenes from Shakespeare's plays -- with themes: "Sex and Violence" (Winter 1995), "'Lord, What Fools These Mortals Be!'" (Spring 1995), "The Obscene and The Absurd" (Fall 1995), "and now for something completely different..." (Winter 1996), "sex, drugs, and shakespeare" (Fall 1996), "Shake 'n Bake Speare" (Winter 1997), "Interview with a Montague and other stories..." (Spring 1997) -- and without themes: every quarter from Fall 1993 to Winter 2003

Workshop Productions: Richard III (Fall 1994), "A Caesar Salad" (Spring 1996)

Summer Productions Like the scene nights, our summer productions are entirely student acted, directed, and produced. Unlike the performances during the academic year, which bring together different scenes from various plays, in the summer we produce a full play with a single director and cast. Our full summer productions include:

Summer Productions: Twelfth Night, or What You Will (Summer 1993), The Merchant of Venice (Summer 1994), Measure for Measure (Summer 1995),  A Midsummer Night's Dream (Summer 1997), The Tempest (Summer 1998), Twelfth Night (Summer 1999), Much Ado About Nothing (Summer 2000), Cymbeline! The Musical (Fall 2001), King John (2002), and the upcoming Macbeth (Spring 2003)
